The impact of changes in fluid characteristics on treatment pumps in low temperature environments

2024.11.05

As the fluid properties of personal care products change at low temperatures, the operation of plastic treatment pumps will face the following major issues:
Pump has difficulty starting
As liquid viscosity increases, the starting torque requirements of the process pump increase. Pumps may have difficulty starting in low temperature environments, especially for fluids containing solid particles or partially crystallized, where the starting load will increase significantly. If the pump motor and drive system are not designed to account for this increase in load, the motor may overheat or be damaged due to excessive load.
traffic reduction
Increases in fluid viscosity directly affect pump flow. In low temperature environments, the efficiency of the treatment pump decreases, and the amount of liquid transported per unit time is significantly reduced. This has an adverse impact on the packaging and distribution systems of personal care products, especially in large-scale production, where insufficient flow may cause production line stagnation or reduced efficiency.
The pressure in the pump chamber increases
Fluid becomes more difficult to flow at low temperatures, which means the internal pressure of the pump increases, especially at the pump's suction and within the pump chamber. Excessive pressure can cause seal failure and even cause structural damage to the pump body. For plastic pumps, this requires special attention, because plastic materials have poorer pressure resistance than metal materials, and long-term exposure to high pressure may cause cracks or deformation of the pump body.
Blockage and crystallization problems in the pump
Some personal care products partially crystallize at low temperatures, such as fatty acids or waxy ingredients in face creams. These crystals may accumulate in the pump inlet and outlet, in filters, or in pipes, causing blockages. In severe cases, the pump may completely lose its delivery capacity and need to be shut down for cleaning.
